The contemporary art venue Fire Station is dedicated to assisting artists and curators through its residency programs and involving the local Qatari communities through events and opportunities, including exhibitions and public programs.
Originally constructed in 1982, the Fire Station housed Qatar's first civil defense agency and continued to function as a fire station until the end of 2012. To host the Fire Station: Artist in Residence initiative, it was repurposed and rebuilt in 2014. The Fire Station complex comprises the original building, the plaza, and later extensions like the annex and extended building.
Things to do at Fire Station Art Residencies:
- The alluring architecture will inspire you in more ways than one: A portion of Doha's early-modern architecture is carefully conserved by the building's lead architect, Ibrahim Al-Jaida, including the tower and the building's characteristic honeycomb façade.
- Indulge in art: Everyone can participate in the creative programs at Fire Station. It promotes and assists regional artists, such as the Artists in Residence (AIR), by giving them access to the facilities and opportunities necessary to lead workshops for the local population and teach art.
- Skill development and vocational training: The instructor's proposal determines community workshops and events, which can include teaching various art and design skills and topics that align with the instructor's creative interests. For artists and curators, Fire Station provides a variety of fascinating residence possibilities. An esteemed panel selects up to 20 artists from among the applicants who submit through an open call.
- Overseas opportunities for budding artists: The Artist in Residence (AIR) program, a nine-month initiative for artists residing and working in Qatar, helps artists grow their creative practice by providing them with a private studio space, production support, mentorship, visiting critics, and curatorial support.
- Purchase art supplies and more: Cass Art Qatar is conveniently located at Fire Station and stocks a wide variety of professional art supplies from some of the world's top brands to ensure artists are well-prepared for their daily studio work, including paints, inks, canvas, paper, pencils, paintbrushes, and more.
- Immerse yourself in gourmet food: Café #999 integrates the worlds of food and art to provide a creative gourmet experience at the Fire Station. One can find inspiration through welcoming conversation and engagement with a light Italian menu and a fresh appearance that will appeal to retro and pop art lovers, promising a unique dining experience.
